The story of three dust grains no bigger than a hair's thickness that hold the secrets of a planet.

The story of three dust grains no bigger than a hair's thickness that hold the secrets of a planet.

In a novel written billions of years ago, three grains of dust, each smaller than the thickness of a hair, revealed the history of an asteroid and many of its secrets.

The three particles from the "Itokawa" asteroid demonstrated that this type of space object is much older and more solid than previously thought.

The three particles from the "Itokawa" asteroid demonstrated that this type of space object is much older and more solid than previously thought.

According to a study published Monday in the journal "Proceedings" of the US National Academy of Sciences, this coincides with a review of plans to avoid a collision with the planet.

In 2005, all three samples arrived.

The three samples were collected from the asteroid in 2005, when it was approximately 300 million kilometres from Earth.

After 5 years, the Japanese space probe "Hayabusa" returned these samples to Earth, along with hundreds of other particles from Tonkawa.

In turn, Fred Jordan, a professor at Australia's Curtin University's Faculty of Earth and Planetary Sciences, wanted to know the age of Tonkawa, a type of asteroid described as having a "loose mass," explaining that it formed from the collection of fragments of a compact asteroid that was shattered by the impact.
To determine the extent, the team examined the crystal structure of the samples, looking for deformations from the collision that created Tonkawa, as well as their history.

Tonkawa was formed by a collision at least 4.2 billion years ago, which is roughly the age of Earth (4.5 billion years), but more importantly, it is ten times older than the age of homogeneous asteroids of similar size.

Jordan is convinced that some of his colleagues will not believe him because of the significance of the asteroid's age.

Furthermore, the study demonstrated that the flexibility of this type of space object in the face of collisions leads to the belief that it could be much larger than previously thought.

According to the scientist, the "Dart" experiment to deflect an asteroid, which was successfully conducted by the US space agency (NASA) last year, also demonstrated that this is possible with an object like Itokawa.

tens of billions of years

It is worth noting that compact asteroids can live for hundreds of millions of years.

Collisions with other asteroids are also gradually eroding it.

Loose-mass asteroids, such as Itokawa, have a very different structure, with a mix of rocks, dust, pebbles, and even voids held together by a minor gravitational effect.

Professor Jordan compared it to "a giant pillow in space, and pillows can absorb shocks."
